I’ve been hearing that some logged in members have been having trouble accessing the forums and are getting 404 errors. I’ve not yet been able to recreate this issue, but have already done a number of things that should correct it.
If anyone is still having this issue, you can post a comment to this update so I can gather more information to troubleshoot it. Though remember to clear your browser cache too, that’s always a good first step when dealing with browsing issues.
No 404 but perhaps related.
I get the “You cannot reply to this topic.” where I want to reply on a topic. So I can’t reply (Mysterious Ads on my Blog / Info on a Pu-Erh / and others) and the world is now saved from my stupid reply. 🙂
Yeah, its related to the 404s. The latest version of our forum software tries to do some newfangled stuff with user permissions. Because of things I’ve done in the past with user permissions, that newfangled stuff is what caused the 404s.
The solution was to revert to an older version of the forum software to beat back the 404s and hope a permanent solution comes later from the programmers. The problem with going back to the older version is that I had to rebuild many of the user permissions settings to beat back the issue with “You cannot reply to this topic” (it was those types changes that I had to do a year ago that caused the conflict with the newfangled stuff).
Anyhow, I’ve implemented a (hopefully) temporary fix and you should now not see the 404 errors and you should have no problems replying and creating new topics.
I’ve learned that in the world website building that if it works, that’s good enough, fix it later. We’ll see, in the meantime, the fix is in.
