@Xavier. Whoah, that is fascinating. Sounds like a good “class” project.

Since I don’t do tea reviews anymore, per se, but rather feature unique ones that catch my interest, I don’t write about things I don’t like. Life’s too short for a bad cup of tea. That said, if there’s a bone I have to pick…I’ll pick. Case in point: The “flavored matcha” incident.

@Cabao – Welcome back. Merry soon-to-be Christmas to you. I dipped into the loose ’05 pu-erh. Liked it quite a bit. Still haven’t tasted the cakes, yet. Getting there, soon.

@Bram I, too, dug into the loose OP today. I liked it quite a bit. The extra aging helped it quite a bit. One of the better shou pu-erhs (or variants) I’ve tried.

@Xavier @Bram – I chatted with @Caobo briefly over chat. If he hasn’t responded via forum, it’s because he’s had difficulty signing into it. I told him to consult @Peter about it.

Got my samples last Friday. I must say, the ’99 cake smelled quite good.

I have recently seen mentions of Vietnamese pu-erh. Particularly from The Camellia Sinensis Teahouse: http://camellia-sinensis.com/en/tea/vietnam-pu-er-1980-he-ji-xiang

Alas, they’re sold out of the really old stuff.

The Canton Tea Co. one you linked to @Caobo is actually one that’s processed on the Yunnan side of the river. Not actually Vietnam. It was…awful. One of the first (and worst) pu-erhs I ever tried. Almost one of the last.

That said, I still hold out hope of trying a true Vietnamese pu-erh. Any contacts or tips you have about acquiring some would be really helpful. New teas are kind of my thing.

      Thanks for posting this.

@Xavier – It’s insanely ghetto. If Snoop Dogg (Lion?) raps about it…I dunno if I wanna go.

I dunno what to think. Yes, it’s still closer than Vegas is to me. But…it’s friggin’ Long Beach.

I re-roast my content once every six years. That seems to help. Also, storing it in a cool, dry place.

Tea Trade (of course), Twitter second, and – until it went under – Portland Tea Enthusiasts’ Alliance HQ. Unfortunately, I have very little opportunity to socialize in real life with regard to tea.

@TheDevotea – The 30 second steep time was for when I was doing it gongfu-style. Moonlight is a Darjeeling oolong. I was playing around with it.

@Jackie @Peter – Are you guys referring to the Castleton Moonlight? I actually had that twice in 2012 – one from Lochan (which I received from you), and one from Thunderbolt Tea (which I received from Benoy Thapa). The difference in both was night and day, and – presumably – they were the same tea; Castleton Moonlight 2012 2nd Flush, a Darjeeling oolong. The 30 second steep-time indicated on Steepster was the first gongfu-style steep I did to it. With Darjeeling oolongs, I tend to do it that way, <i>then,/i> a Western prep to see the difference.

If the Moonlight @Peter is referring to is the same one that you guys sent me last year, I guarantee you that it’s spoiled. Not sure how. Oxygenation, molding, I dunno.

That said, I’ve recently been prone to headaches if I have tea on an empty stomach. Doesn’t matter what kind – green, white, black, what have you. Or if I have tea with something super salty. Same effect. Some of it might be dehydration, but another contributing factor might be sinuses. Compounded with that, caffeine of any sort is a known aggragant for anything head/sinus related. (At least for me, anecdotally-speaking.)

The only tea that I don’t get headaches from on an empty stomach are sheng pu-erhs. That’s it.

Y’know, I’ve actually tried to schedule posts ahead of time on my Tea Trade blog, but it ended up posting immediately after I “publish”.

This excites me greatly. And it would probably be the only thing that would ever put me within arms reach of Belfast.

That said, I think the only way to make it feasible would be to blend the tea, but I do hope they release a premium single estate offering as well.

@Jackie – I heard back from the brewer .It’s not due out in the U.S., yet. But they have plans to ship it overseas eventually.

I was lusting after this when I saw @maykingtea‘s photo of it on Facebook. And, since then, I’ve been scouring every specialty beer place I know about. No luck, so far.

I personally love black matcha (or powdered black tea, whatever). I’ve seen more and more of it lately. Heck, I’ve reviewed to of ’em. One of which was even from Red Leaf Tea (a company that hates me now after my flavored matcha rant) – and I loved the stuff.

What I would like to see is a powdered black tea made from Japanese kocha (black tea). THAT would deserve to be called matcha.
